Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) at PRE Therapy

SFMA is a a functional movement screening protocol intended to provide a systematic method of analyzing fundamental movement to provide a comprehensive progression treatment plan to get you back to what you love doing – pain-free.

A series of specific full-body movement tests helps narrow down the areas of pain and dysfunction and determines the root cause.  Its primary focus is to help the practitioner differentiate between mobility, stability, and motor control.

FAQs

+ What is SFMA?

When we experience trauma in our bodies, the nervous system learns to create a compensatory, and often dysfunctional, movement pattern. By using a Selective Functional Movement Assessment, a therapist can identify musculoskeletal dysfunction and use this information to create a multi-segmental treatment plan. This motor programming allows the patient to help re-integrate the proper movement patterns and help their brains communicate with the body.

+ How does PRE Therapy incorporate SFMA in a unique and different way?

SFMA is a movement screening program incorporated into the PRE Therapyour Active Rehab experience by our Kinesiologists. All our therapist communicate well together to refer you to the best therapist and treatment for your unique need.

+ What is the PRE Therapy clinic experience like?

This movement assessment is a series of movements carried out by our Kinesiologists at the beginning of an assessment. The therapist will then use these markers as subjective and objective measures to help track progress to ensure you are improving.

+ What are the benefits of SFMA?

As a movement screening assessment, this method will help narrow down the area of restriction and pin point what type of movements, stretches, or strength exercises are necessary to help you on the road to recovery. Some potential benefits of using SFMA include:

  1. Comprehensive assessment: SFMA looks at multiple joints and movement patterns, providing a more complete picture of an individual's functional movement capabilities.
  2. Early identification of impairments: By identifying impairments early on, SFMA can help prevent the development of more serious conditions or injuries down the line.
  3. Targeted treatment: By pinpointing specific impairments, SFMA can help guide treatment to address specific issues rather than taking a more generalized approach.
  4. Improved function: By addressing impairments and improving functional movement patterns, SFMA can help improve overall function and performance.
  5. Reduced pain: By addressing the root cause of musculoskeletal problems, SFMA can help reduce pain and improve quality of life.

+ Who is SFMA for?

SFMA is for everyone! It is a comprehensive set of specific movement and mobility assessments which can be applied to anyone.! This method is used by health care professionals, physical therapists, chiropractors, and athletic trainers to help diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems.
